Ama Literacy

Ama & coating

Little Maha on sticky leftovers · Maha Prishna keeps the literacy honest — for Americans ready to invest in real practice.

Ama is unfinished business

In classical teaching, Ama is sticky, incompletely transformed residue — from food, stress, or both — that Agni did not finish. It is not a moral failure and not a Western lab code. It is a literacy word: something left mid-process that can fog the mind, weigh the gut, and show up as a morning film on the tongue.

Framed as traditional teaching on Agni/Ama (Charaka lineage) — educational, not a diagnosis.

Why the tongue shows it

Overnight, incomplete digestion often leaves a soft coat. Thickness, color, and how easily it scrapes are morning reports — not scare tactics. Clinic protocol tags tongue scraping (jihwa) as a two-minute dinacharya step: scrape gently back to tip, rinse, and note what you see in a check-in. That habit builds awareness of Agni and Ama without turning your bathroom into a clinic.

Digestion signs that travel with coating

Coating rarely travels alone. Watch for heaviness two hours after meals, irregular stools, dull cravings, midday fog, and breath that feels “stuck.” Strong hunger that arrives on time and lightness after eating usually mean fire is doing its job. Seed advice cards map Agni types: steady (sama), variable Vata (vishama), sharp Pitta (tikshna), slow Kapha (manda) — each needs a different pace of clearing.

Foods that help vs. slow the clear

From the clinical food seed: ginger, cumin, black pepper, and turmeric are tagged agni-friendly when cooked warm. Potato and watermelon carry higher ama_risk when Agni is dull — watermelon especially wants to be eaten alone (viruddha caution). Light cooked soups from Laura’s kitchen — sopa depuradora with chayote, zucchini, cumin, turmeric, ginger, and cilantro; or sopa desintoxicante with celery and green beans — are designed as clearing vehicles, not punishment.

Literacy practice, not self-diagnosis

Use coating as a daily mirror. Photos for intake help Laura compare week to week. The tongue education page teaches vocabulary; clinical reading happens in consult. This guide is educational only — it is not a Tongue nav tab and not a substitute for acute Western care.

What to do before you book

For one week: scrape each morning, note coat and hunger, eat one warm midday meal, and cut iced drinks with food. Bring those notes — and kitchen constraints — to your session. Laura will map Ama against your real life, not a generic cleanse PDF.
